When we move away from the needs and concerns of white Western women, the connections of health to the broader determinants becomes clearer.

And, all too often we have concentrated narrowly on education for individual transformation and growth to the expense of larger issues. One of our primary areas of study, transformative learning, for instance, has been largely constrained to talking about health as a series of individual choices and local conditions rather than as a venue for social transformation. Much of the writing on women, health, and transformative learning is focused on individual women in oppressive conditions (Meyer, 2009; Nash, 2007).
